What are Nicotine Salts?
Traditionally, vape juice uses a form of nicotine often referred to as Freebase Nicotine where Nicotine is at its purest and is simply added to VG and PG to create vape juice. If you'd ever vaped prior to the last year or so, you've probably vaped a "freebase nicotine" juice, rather than a "Nicotine Salt" juice. Nicotine Salts make your vape juice smoother while allowing you to vape much higher nicotine strengths (For a comprehensive dive into Nicotine Salts, click here).
The most important distinction between the two forms of Nicotine is their pH level. Nicotine salts have a lower pH than Freebase Nicotine. This is caused by introducing an acid to the Freebase in order to cause a chemical reaction that brings the pH level much closer to that of humans. In the case of vape juice, the acid that's introduced is Benzoic acid. Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many different plants and actually serves as a means of "biosynthesis" in nature. While it makes for a ‘smoother’ vape, Nicotine Salts vape juice is not absorbed into the bloodstream as efficiently as Freebase Nicotine. Rather, some of the Nicotine is not readily bioavailable, so it is absorbed at approximately half the rate of Freebase Nicotine. This is why you see Nicotine Salts vape juice in such drastically high milligram quantities, like 50mg, because your body cannot absorb all 50mg when you vape nicotine salts. As with all things, there are advantages and disadvantages to Nicotine Salts vape juice. Looking to switch? There may be a trade-off.
Smoother draw; less harsh on the throat.
More pronounced flavor - Nicotine salts don't carry the "taste" of Nicotine like Freebase does, so you'll notice a more "true to flavor" vape at higher strengths.
Not encouraged for sub-ohm vapers, unless you're using a much lower strength than the usual "Salt Nic" high Nicotine levels. If you're a sub-ohmer, be careful.
Less pronounced throat hit - for some vapers, this may be a turn-off. Your usual Nicotine strength will not ‘feel’ like it normally does.
Fewer juices available - if you're trying to move over to Nicotine Salts, you may find that your favorite vape juices do not come that way.
Why don’t We offer Nicotine Salts?
When it came time for us at VistaVapors to consider including Nicotine Salts in our lineup of vape juices, we needed to weigh all of the advantages and disadvantages. Would we sell a lot of it? Probably! But, would it be in line with our mission as a company? Probably not. When VistaVapors was founded, our goal was to provide an opportunity for anyone who was a current cigarette smoker to use vaping as a means of quitting. We did that through focusing on the Customer experience and offering the lowest prices in the market. Our current sales model encourages would-be quitters to start first with higher nicotine strengths, like 18mg, and to gradually step down until you’ve reached 0mg. However, with Nicotine Salts, for someone who’s trying to step down their Nicotine consumption, it becomes more difficult to cut Nicotine out of your life. Nicotine Salts are, after all, absorbed less efficiently than Freebase Nicotine, so it requires a higher strength to get the same desired result. You see it with products that offer 50mg in their pods - people get more hooked on Nicotine than they were before. In an effort to help people quit smoking (and eventually quit vaping altogether) and to fight against teen vaping, we’ve decided to stay away from Nicotine Salts and continue with our current nicotine strength options.
