Turns out the iQOS isn't as safe as they claimed...

Posted by

Not that we're here to throw shade at anyone, because that's counterproductive and doesn't help any party to genuinely improve their products, but here we are with more misinformation from Big Tobacco. As it turns out, the recently-approved by the FDA iQOS device (I quit original smoking - what a name, right?) doesn't actually do what it's been reported to do! Odd, right? Why turn to a vaping device or vape juice to help you get over your smoking habit when you can use a "heat-not-burn" (but, apparently, still burn) device made by your favorite cigarette manufacturer? The reason is simple, vaping products have been proven, time and time again, to be 95% safer than traditional smoking, and the only approved "heat-not-burn" device on the market has now been proven to do exactly what it says it's not doing, which is burn the tobacco in the device.

In a study conducted at the University of California - Riverside, the iQOS device was tested to determine whether or not the claims that the device does not burn any of the tobacco inside, and what chemicals were released during the "heating" process. Remember, this device was recently approved by the FDA and is currently the only non-smoking tobacco product that has been approved through the PMTA process. What they learned through their testing was simple, if the consumer doesn't take expert care of their iQOS device, the tobacco inside will, in fact, burn during use. So, the entire reason the device exists is null and void, apparently.

As we mentioned from the top, we're not here to throw shade, but we are going to ask some questions. First, why on Earth was this product approved by the FDA if the first independent study to test the efficacy of the product resulted in findings that completely contradict the claims by the companies that developed it? Second, if this product is as unsafe as some of the data shows, how did the FDA not catch this as it was being approved through the PMTA process? If lying is enough to get approval for your products, don't you think it would be easy for all vape companies to just make up some random crud and send their products through? Nope, vapor products are required by the new PMTA ruling to follow the process of independent testing to prove their products will not have a net-negative effect on public health. Was this the same process that the iQOS device had to go through? If that's the case, how could they possibly have gotten away with testing that would otherwise prove the rampant toxicity of their products?

Questions everywhere, and zero answers. Seems like the theme the last few years with the FDA and other regulatory bodies. Meanwhile, across the pond in the UK, vaping is championed as an effective smoking cessation...are we living in the Upside Down? Honest-to-goodness, this seriously baffles me, and I know I'm not alone.

Where do vapers and vape companies stand now? Well, the first and foremost important step is to follow the legal guidelines as they are issued. What's worse than bad regulations? Not following them and no longer being able to legally exist, that's what.

As ridiculous as these regulations are getting, and as seemingly backwards as much of the actions and approvals from the FDA have been, the best thing we can do as a community is to continue to fight for our inalienable right to make our own choices as adults. That's Numero Uno. If you're reading this blog and you haven't taken the time to join CASAA and contact your representatives, in the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, "DO IT NOW!".

We're going to continue to fight the fight, and we will stand by anyone else that's in the same boat.

Let's do this, vapers.
